When looking at the leaked footage for the original DOOM 4, it looks like an awkward mishmash of games such as Rage and Call of Duty, so much so that fans have gone on to call this prototype version " Call of DOOM."
The game appeared to build off of DOOM II due to its "Hell on Earth" narrative hook. Despite the mixed fan reception to DOOM 3, developer id Software intended to further depart from the classic DOOM formula, yet that game never saw the light of day. Slowing the gameplay down to what felt like a crawl for fans of the previous games created serious tension in the FPS community. the slower, more atmospheric gameplay structure crafted a more horror-like experience than expected. In 2004, DOOM saw a radical departure in design and gameplay philosophy with DOOM 3. DOOM's importance cannot be understated, but DOOM wasn't always the champion of the FPS genre like some remember. The frantic, fast combat combined with key hunting and maze levels made for a visceral, explorative experience that many people still play today.
The first two classic games and their expansions helped popularize the growing genre of shooters, paving the road ahead of the quality standard for these kinds of games. By far, DOOM is one of the most influential and important first-person-shooters of all time.
